How to Find Your Next Favorite Whiskey Without Wasting Money on Bottles You Don't Like
The fastest way to stop overpaying for whiskey you never finish is to taste before you buy. Here is exactly how we help you do it, and why it works.
Almost everyone has one. A bottle that sits three quarters full on the back of the shelf, bought on a recommendation or a nice label or a good review, poured twice, and quietly avoided ever since.
That bottle cost somewhere between forty and ninety dollars. Multiply it by the four or five others behind it and you are looking at real money spent on whiskey nobody in the house wants to drink.
Here is the part that stings: none of those bottles were bad. They just were not right for you.
Price does not predict what you will like
We spent about a year and roughly five thousand dollars at big-box stores learning this before we ever opened. We bought by price. We bought by reputation. We bought the bottles that were supposed to be good.
What we found was that some of the bottles on the bottom shelf were outstanding, and some of the ones displayed up top at three times the price were a letdown. Not objectively bad. Just not worth what we paid, to us.
The variable nobody accounts for is your own palate. Some people want sweetness and vanilla. Some want smoke. Some want the sharp grain bite of a rye and find the smooth stuff boring. There is no scoring system that knows which one you are.
The fix is boring and it works
Taste it first.
Any bottle on our floor is four dollars per taste. Not a marketing sample, not a thimble. Ten milliliters served in a one ounce glass, enough to nose it, sip it, sit with it, and decide.
Four tastes runs you sixteen dollars. Compare that against one sixty dollar mistake and the math resolves itself quickly.
What that looks like in practice
Most people walk in expecting to be out in ten minutes and end up staying closer to forty five. They taste something they were sure they would love and shrug. Then they taste something they would never have picked up and stop mid-sip.
That second reaction is the whole reason we built the shop this way.
You do not need to know anything walking in. You do not need to use the right words. Tell whoever is behind the counter what you have liked before, or what you did not like, and let them pour a couple of things against it.
Come taste four before you commit to one.
Any bottle on our floor is four dollars per taste. Bring the name of something you liked, or something you did not, and we will pour against it until you find the one worth taking home. No appointment, no minimum, no need to know a thing about whiskey walking in.
